Craig Venter talks about the return of promiscuity in evolution: in
the old days, bacteria traded DNA by cut and paste. Then we had the
long interregnum of grammar - regulated exchange of DNA in precise
50/50 proportions through sex, celebrated by Dawkins in his book "The
Selfish Gene."
But of course this peer-to-peer (as opposed to hierarchical
parent-to-child) mixing has been going on all along, as viruses
exchange DNA. And now, we will have more and more human-designed
cut and paste genetic engineering....
A separate point about how our bodies are not really
"all-human." They are human structures populated by trillions of
bacteria, viruses and the like, all of which together comprise the
living being. "We're really just zoos," says Ricky Wurman. Or, I
would add a more business-y metaphor: Shades of corporations,
semi-permanent structures engineered to create large-schale identity
in a world of individual agents. But any corporation consists of
employees, contractors and even total strangers in its
midst. Likewise, the body consists of its "own" materials, plus
symbiotic organisms and food (which may or may not be incorporated
into the body's self).
